What Is 925 Sterling Silver? A Practical Buying Guide
Understand 925 silver, the difference between an alloy and a coating, and the details to check before buying silver jewellery.
What 925 tells you
Sterling silver has a silver fineness of 925 parts per thousand: 92.5% silver by weight. The remaining portion consists of other alloying metals. The number describes composition; it does not describe chain thickness, finishing quality or how a clasp works.
When reading a listing, separate the material description from the colour. A silver-coloured necklace might be sterling, plated base metal or another material altogether. Ask for the underlying metal, not just the appearance.
An alloy is different from a coating
In a sterling alloy, silver forms part of the material itself. A plated piece has a surface layer over another material. Sterling can also have a coating, so “sterling silver” and “rhodium plated” are not necessarily contradictory descriptions. One describes the base; the other describes the finish.
For a useful product comparison, write down both. “Sterling silver with a rhodium finish” gives more information than “premium silver necklace.” If the finish is unspecified, ask before choosing a cleaning product.
Read beyond the stamp
A stamp can be useful, but it is not independent proof that a particular item is genuine. Keep the seller's written material description and purchase record. Canada's marking requirements also make an important distinction: applying a quality mark is not mandatory, although marks used must comply with the applicable rules.
Before ordering a chain, check length, width, construction, clasp and any pendant compatibility information. Two pieces with the same silver fineness can offer very different wearing experiences.
A sensible first purchase
Start with a shape and length you already enjoy wearing. Ask how to care for that specific finish and whether the seller can explain repair options. Choose a clear specification over a dramatic claim such as “never tarnishes.” Use the related care guide to plan storage rather than treating a material stamp as a maintenance guarantee.
Common questions
Does 925 mean silver plated?
No. In a genuine sterling description, 925 refers to the silver alloy. A sterling item may separately have a surface coating.
