Jewellery Marks in Canada: Reading 925, 10K and Other Labels

Understand what precious-metal quality marks communicate in Canada and why a stamp alone is not an authenticity test.

Read the number with the material

A quality mark communicates a material claim. Sterling-related marks and gold-karat marks should be read in context with the seller's description, rather than treated as decorative symbols. Canada's Competition Bureau publishes guidance on the applicable precious-metal marking rules.

For a necklace, ask what part a mark refers to if the piece combines different materials. A clasp, pendant and chain should not be assumed identical solely because you find a mark on one component.

A mark is not a laboratory result

A stamp is useful information, but a consumer cannot independently establish composition simply by recognizing its shape. Keep the written description and seller's identity. If authenticity is disputed, ask about assessment by a qualified professional rather than using an abrasive home test.

Conversely, the absence of a quality mark does not automatically establish that an item is fake. Canadian guidance explains that quality marking is not mandatory; when a mark is used, compliance matters.

Be careful with imported terminology

An overseas guide may describe rules from a different market. Terms for layered materials, quality marks and related requirements should be checked against the relevant Canadian guidance when interpreting a Canadian sale.

Do not use a material mark as proof of manufacturing origin. “Designed in,” “made in” and the metal composition are separate claims. Ask for the particular information you need instead of inferring it from a country associated with the brand.

Keep a useful purchase record

Save the invoice, product page and clear images of the mark without damaging the piece. Note the length, width and disclosed weight as separate details. These records make a later question more specific and easier to resolve.

This is a consumer reading guide, not a complete compliance checklist for manufacturers or importers. For a legal marking decision, consult the current official requirements and appropriate professional advice rather than relying only on a blog summary.
