Does Sterling Silver Tarnish? What to Expect
Learn how tarnish differs from damage and build a practical routine for wearing, checking and storing silver jewellery.
Darkening does not settle authenticity
Sterling silver can darken during normal use. Tiffany identifies environmental exposure, including sulfur-containing substances and humidity, among factors associated with tarnishing. A colour change on its own does not prove an item is fake.
It also does not prove that every dark patch is harmless tarnish. A coating that is wearing through, an intentionally darkened finish and a damaged surface can look different in person. If you do not know the finish, ask before polishing.
Start with observation
Look at the piece in good light. Is the change spread across exposed areas, concentrated around a clasp or accompanied by roughness? Take a photograph and compare it with the original listing. Avoid scraping a hidden area as a home authenticity test; that may create new damage without answering the question.
For a recently purchased item, contact the seller with the material description and photographs. A good response should discuss the specific piece rather than dismissing every change as normal.
Make maintenance manageable
Choose a repeatable routine: remove the piece before unsuitable activities, inspect it before putting it away and store it dry. Use care products approved for its finish. A polishing method intended for plain silver is not automatically suitable for a coated or deliberately oxidized design.
An anti-tarnish storage product can be useful, but it is not a lifetime guarantee. Follow its instructions and keep it away from moisture. Packaging does not replace the need to identify what you own.
When to ask a jeweller
Seek help if the chain feels stiff, a link looks thin, the clasp no longer closes reliably or the surface change persists after the recommended care. Appearance and mechanical condition are separate checks. A shiny chain can still have a worn connection.
The best buying question is not simply “Will it tarnish?” Ask what finish the piece has, how to maintain it and what support is available if its condition changes.
