Polished, Satin and Textured Silver: Choosing a Finish
Compare silver surface styles without confusing appearance with purity or scratch resistance.
Look at the surface, then the material
Polished, satin, brushed and textured are terms about appearance. They do not replace a statement of silver fineness or tell you whether an additional coating is present. Two pieces can share the same alloy but look noticeably different because the surface has been finished differently. Ask the seller to identify both material and finish.
Use photographs with context
Request a close-up and an ordinary-light photograph when the distinction matters to you. A highly reflective piece can look dramatically different when the lighting or background changes. Compare the finish over more than one view, and remember that a photograph cannot tell you how a texture feels against skin or clothing.
Plan for care before choosing
A cloth or polish selected to brighten one surface may alter the look of another. The Canadian Conservation Institute notes that polishing removes material, so it should not be treated as a neutral action. Ask whether routine care should involve wiping only and whether any brushed pattern or dark detailing needs special handling.
Choose a finish you will enjoy maintaining
Consider the look you want after ordinary wear, rather than only the first studio photograph. Ask whether a jeweller can restore the finish if needed and whether that work would affect a coating or detail. Keep a photograph of the original appearance. A shared visual reference makes a future refinishing conversation much more precise.
Common questions
Does satin silver have a different purity from polished silver?
The finish name does not specify purity. Check the alloy description separately.
