Oxidised Silver: Understanding a Deliberately Dark Finish
Distinguish an intentional dark surface from unwanted discolouration before reaching for silver polish.
Ask whether the dark areas are intentional
Some silver jewellery is sold with deliberately darkened areas that highlight a pattern or contrast with brighter surfaces. Before trying to make a piece uniformly shiny, check how the seller describes its finish. A dark recess may be part of the design you purchased rather than a cleaning problem that needs to be corrected.
A finish is not an alloy grade
Oxidised, antique effect and blackened are appearance descriptions, not silver purity numbers. Ask what the base material is and how the dark appearance was produced. Different processes can be described in similar everyday language. Knowing that an item is dark does not establish that it is sterling, nor identify a suitable product for cleaning it.
Polishing can change the design
Conservation guidance emphasises examining an object and its construction before treatment. For jewellery with a deliberate dark finish, ask which surfaces may be wiped and which should be left alone. Do not use a dip or polishing cloth with the goal of removing all colour unless a knowledgeable jeweller has confirmed that this is appropriate.
Discuss restoration before experimenting
If the contrast has become uneven or you dislike how the piece has aged, show it to the seller or a jeweller. Ask whether the intended finish can be refreshed and what that would involve. Photograph the piece before handing it over and agree on the desired result. Cleaning and refinishing are different requests; make clear which one you want.
Common questions
Should oxidised silver be polished until it is bright?
Not automatically. The dark surface may be intentional, so confirm the finish-specific instructions first.
