How to Find Your Ring Size Before Ordering Online
Use a well-fitting ring, accurate internal measurements and professional sizing to reduce avoidable ring-fit mistakes.
| Mistake | Better check |
|---|---|
| Measuring the outside | Measure the internal opening |
| Using a different finger | Confirm intended hand and finger |
| Trusting an unscaled printout | Verify the printed scale marker |
| Ignoring band width | Try an appropriately sized gauge or sample |
Choose the intended finger
Start with the exact finger and hand on which the ring will be worn. An existing ring is useful only if it fits that finger comfortably. Do not assume another finger or the other hand provides an interchangeable measurement.
GIA describes professional finger gauges and the measurement of a ring's interior as ways to assess size. For an important purchase, a jeweller's measurement is a stronger starting point than a guessed size.
Measure an existing ring carefully
If using inside diameter, measure across the internal opening through the centre, excluding the metal. Compare that number with the seller's own chart and units. A ring's outside diameter includes the band and is not the measurement you need.
If a printable chart is supplied, check its scale marker after printing. A page scaled to fit the printer can change the reference size. Do not rely on a screenshot measured on a phone screen.
Match the width and shape
A size number does not describe the entire fit. GIA's sizing benchmarks distinguish wide-band measuring tools for wider rings. Try a gauge or sample that reasonably reflects the band you plan to buy.
Consider how the ring crosses the knuckle and how it feels once in place. If there is a substantial difference between those points, ask a jeweller for advice instead of choosing from one tight measurement.
Resolve uncertainty before ordering
Repeat measurements under ordinary conditions and note any disagreement. A cord or paper strip can introduce stretch and reading errors, so treat it as a rough check rather than definitive sizing.
Ask whether the specific design can be resized, what the seller's exchange terms are and who pays for adjustments. Do not assume every band can be altered. For a surprise gift, borrow a suitable existing ring only when appropriate and confirm the correct finger with someone who knows.
