Turquoise: Colour, Matrix and Material Descriptions

Understand turquoise identity and why blue colour, veining and a trade name do not independently establish authenticity.

Start with identity rather than colour

Turquoise is a blue-to-green gem material. GIA describes its characteristic appearance and lists Mohs hardness around 5–6. Other materials can resemble it, so a bright blue colour is not enough to establish identity.

Ask whether the item is turquoise and how the material is described. Do not treat an informal phrase such as “turquoise-coloured” as a mineral identification.

Examine the complete surface

GIA discusses colour and matrix patterns in turquoise. Our visual suggestion is to look at the whole stone and decide whether its pattern suits the design, rather than assuming more or fewer veins always means better.

For a pair or a group of beads, view the actual set together. Different patterns may be intentional, but a stock photograph cannot show exactly what your order will contain.

Ask what has been done to the material

Request treatment and construction information, including any stabilization or other processing the seller discloses. If an assembled or reconstituted material is offered, its description should explain that rather than relying on a broad gem name.

Ask what documentation supports a specific origin claim. Matrix appearance alone is not a complete provenance record.

Plan care for the particular piece

Before using a cleaner, tell the jeweller what you know about the material and any treatment. The finish of the surrounding metal does not determine what is suitable for the stone.

Choose a design and maintenance routine you can manage. Turquoise is associated with December in modern birthstone lists, but personal preference matters more than following a single colour or origin story. Keep the exact material description for future service questions.
