Tanzanite: Blue-Violet Zoisite and Practical Wear

Learn what tanzanite is and how to judge its colour presentation, setting and written product information.

Begin with the mineral name

Tanzanite is a blue-to-violet variety of zoisite. GIA lists Mohs hardness around 6–7. Its colour can make it visually comparable with other blue gems, but similarity does not make it sapphire.

Ask for the material name in writing and avoid treating a dramatic photograph as an identification result. The scientific identity should be clearer than the marketing description.

View the colour as the stone moves

Our practical comparison is to request a slow video of the actual piece. Note how colour and brightness appear from different directions, and compare candidates under similar lighting.

If you are matching a pendant to earrings, view the pieces together where possible. Closely cropped photographs taken separately can obscure differences in scale and appearance.

Ask about treatment and design

Request the treatment disclosure for the individual stone, then discuss its intended use and care. Do not infer treatment status from how saturated its blue appears on a screen.

A frequently worn ring should prompt questions about setting protection and service. Consider the whole item rather than translating a mineral property into a blanket promise of durability.

Keep origin claims proportionate

GIA's overview connects tanzanite with its Tanzanian source. That general background does not mean a seller's photograph independently verifies an individual item's identity or supply-chain history.

For a December gift, tanzanite can be one of several modern birthstone options. Ask about fit, returns and practical care alongside that personal connection. Choose the documented piece you like, rather than buying solely because a listing calls it an investment.
