Repairing 10K Gold Jewellery: What to Ask a Jeweller

Prepare for a repair assessment without assuming that every chain or finish can be restored in the same way.

Stop using a damaged fastening

If a clasp no longer closes normally or a chain has a damaged link, put the piece aside for assessment. Do not try to confirm its strength by pulling on it. Photograph the affected area and collect the original product description, receipt and any record of previous repairs. Explain when you first noticed the problem.

Describe the result you want

A repair can concern function, appearance or both. Tell the jeweller whether maintaining the existing length, link pattern or colour match matters to you. Mention any coating that the seller disclosed. Ask what is realistically achievable for this particular construction rather than assuming that a small-looking fault must have a simple invisible repair.

Ask for the scope in writing

Before approving work, request an estimate and a description of the proposed change. Ask whether the finished length, clasp, finish or visible join will differ. Find out whether any additional finishing would be quoted separately. These are questions for the person inspecting the object; this article does not prescribe a soldering method or guarantee that every chain is repairable.

Check the returned piece

Review the completed work with the jeweller and ask for the applicable care instructions. Keep the repair record with the original specification. GIA encourages professional inspection as part of jewellery care; a repair visit is also an opportunity to ask about other visible concerns. Do not extend advice for a plain chain to a gem-set item without mentioning those materials.

Common questions

Can any broken 10K chain be repaired invisibly?

That cannot be promised without examining the particular design, construction and damage.
