Mohs Hardness Is Not the Whole Durability Story

Separate scratch resistance, resistance to breaking and environmental stability when choosing gemstone jewellery.

Durability has several parts

ToughnessHow does it resist breaking or chipping?
StabilityHow does it respond to heat, light and chemicals?

What hardness measures

Mohs hardness concerns relative resistance to scratching. It is not a direct measurement of how well a gem survives a blow, and its numbers should not be treated as a simple linear strength scale.

GIA's durability guidance separates hardness, toughness and stability. Keeping those ideas distinct avoids the mistaken conclusion that the highest hardness number means indestructible jewellery.

Toughness answers a different question

Toughness concerns resistance to breaking and chipping. The structure and condition of the individual gem matter, alongside its shape and the way the setting exposes edges or points.

Our practical recommendation is to discuss the complete ring or pendant with a jeweller. A material's published property is not an inspection of the actual stone in your order.

Stability includes the environment

Stability concerns responses to conditions such as chemicals, heat and light. Treatments and other components may also affect appropriate care.

A cleaner suitable for one material should not automatically be used on a piece containing several. Ask about the gemstone, its known treatment, the metal and any adhesive or decorative finish together.

Convert knowledge into buying questions

Ask whether the design suits the intended wear, what activities should be avoided and what routine inspection is advised. For a frequently worn ring, consider setting height and protection as well as appearance.

Do not scratch, strike or heat jewellery to test a property at home. If a stone already shows damage, seek assessment rather than relying on a general durability chart. The aim is not to find a gem with no possible weaknesses, but to understand the particular piece well enough to wear and maintain it sensibly.
