Citrine: Yellow Quartz and Heat-Treatment Questions

Understand citrine colour, its relationship to quartz and why natural formation and treatment are separate questions.

A yellow-to-orange quartz variety

Citrine is quartz in a yellow to brownish-orange colour range. GIA lists its Mohs hardness as 7. It is not yellow topaz, despite the similar colour that can appear in photographs or older naming habits.

Use the actual material name when comparing two pieces. “Golden stone” is a colour impression; it does not identify a mineral.

Ask how the colour was obtained

GIA explains that much commercial citrine results from heating amethyst. This is a useful reason to ask about treatment, not a reason to declare every citrine item identical or every treated stone an imitation.

Record whether the seller is describing a natural material, a laboratory-grown material or another substance, and ask separately about treatment. Avoid interpreting “natural” as an automatic claim of unheated colour.

Choose the colour you enjoy

Our comparison method is to view stones against a neutral background and look across the entire face. Decide whether you prefer a pale yellow or a deeper orange tone. A highly edited photograph can make this harder, so request ordinary-light images when the shade matters.

For a gift, compare the stone with the intended metal colour. The same citrine may give a different visual impression beside yellow gold and a white metal.

Include the complete jewellery specification

Check measurements, setting and what is included in the price. A large stone in a photograph is not a promise about finished pendant size.

Citrine and topaz share a November birthstone association in modern lists. That makes them alternative gift themes, not interchangeable materials. Follow care instructions for the actual item and any treatment rather than choosing a cleaner by birth month.
